William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891).American military officer,who served with great prominence as a Union General during the American Civil War (1861-65).He is widely recognised as an outstanding military strategist,but also criticized for his scorched earth & total war policies against the Confederates.He also wrote what is widely regarded as the best known accounts of the war in his 1875 memoirs.His father named him Tecumseh,out of fanciful admiration for the American Indian Shawnee Chief
