Sir Stamford Raffles (1781-1826).English statesman and colonial administrator.He served as Lieutenant-Governor of British Java (1811-15),and Governor-General of British Bencoolen,now modern day Sumatra (1817-22),but he is best known as the founder of Singapore,setting it up as a trading post for the East India Company,in 1819.He was also a co-founder & first President of the Zoological Society of London,& helped found London Zoo,barely months before his death (it opened in 1828)
